Golf Teaching Tip – Hitting the Long Bunker Shot

by admin on June 26, 2010

Being in a sand trap anywhere on the golf course can be a trying experience for any golfer, but being in a fairway bunker may very well be the most difficult of all shots in golf. So, what should you do when you find yourself beached on the sand 195 yards from the green? This golf teaching tip will encourage improve this part of your golf game.

One of the most important points to keep in mind is that you can’t hit out of a fairway bunker like you do a greenside bunker. In a greenside bunker you’re good up next to the green, so you have to hit leisurely the ball an inch or two to offset the distance from a full swing. In the fairway bunker we want all the distance we can get generally, so you need to hit more of the ball and less of the sand.

When you first approach your ball you’ll want to regain as good of a stance as possible. Establish a firm base with your feet. The ball should be in the middle of your stance, or unbiased a little more forward.

On the backswing, take the club away as you would for a normal golf shot. Don’t make the mistake of trying to pick the club up and hit with more down force. The object with this bunker shot is to not bewitch much sand at all.

Your grip should also be as it is on a normal fairway shot. Don’t choke down. Maintain a firm grip and play the shot as you normally would.

Add another club length for this bunker shot. So if you’re 150 yards from the green and would normally hit a 7 iron from the fairway, grab a 6 iron out of the bunker.

Another point to keep in mind is to hurry through the ball. Don’t try to guide the ball or get to cute. Trust your golf swing and see the ball flying out of the bunker before hitting your shot. By getting a positive image in your mind first, you’ll be amazed at how remarkable better you’ll hit the actual shot.

Without a doubt, the fairway bunker shot is difficult. But, it’s certainly not impossible. Just stare Tiger Woods or any other PGA pro on TV. The key is to practice. Most weekend golfers never practice this shot. This is the main reason they often struggle with it as well. Spend a little time on the driving range with this shot and you won’t be intimidated by it out on the golf course.
